Home with the Kids - R2BC

Well, that escalated quickly didn't it?

Only a couple of weeks ago the word seemed like a different place,  then schools closed,  followed by restaurants, cafes and pubs,   then 'non-essential' shops and now  we have to text for permission to leave the house (or complete a form when the text message service is not working.)

It's a crazy situation and totally surreal.

We are doing fine,  feeling grateful for many things knowing that so many people are struggling in so many different ways.   We can't go out to the beach, and we can't meet our friends but it's a small problem compared to many, we can power through.

At the start I thought slightly enviously of the people who could lay around watching endless TV, and spending their days exactly as they wished, while we tried to work from home, cook dinners and entertain and educate two over excited kids.

Then I realised that they are actually a great distraction, although drive us crazy, they keep us busy, keep us laughing and if it wasn't for them it would be so easy to lay in bed all day feeling sorry for ourselves.

I'm thankful that they are the ages they are,  younger and they would be even harder to occupy,  older and they would be used to going out independently and hanging out with their friends.

I am thankful that they are generally good kids,  overall they do listen (you may have to say the thing 2 million times but they do listen in the end to the important stuff)  and they are generally considerate (as much as kids can be).

I'm enjoying the extra time we are spending together,  not that they spend much time out the house without us other than school but we have been playing more games together, and making an effort to spend less time staring at screens.

We've talked more, especially to Leo who understands more about the situation,  about the world, and everything that is going on, how they feel about it and the impact it will have.  We've spoken about other big events that were terrible and how positive things came from them.

I am thankful for the their teachers and the schools who have been preparing distance learning for them which is about to start.  I'm also pleased that it looks like it will be manageable unlike many schools I'm hearing about who are overloading the children with work which is causing everyone stress.

I'm also grateful for the fact that if it wasn't for them I wouldn't have discovered The Body Coach -Joe Wicks and his daily PE sessions.  Not only are we having a good laugh doing them (bunny jumps had us in fits of laughter this morning as I insisted we needed to do the ears when they couldn't see the point)  but it is making us all feel so much better afterwards.

We are lucky to be able to talk to the neighbours, even if it means a shouted conversation over the balconies.

  1. Totally surreal. When you said you had to text before going out, I didn't realize that you meant you needed to wait for permission. Crazy and scary. On a different note, I love that you have all that open space in front of your building. As I wrote on my post, a view makes all the difference. I wish you all safe and well. xxx

  2. Memories are made of quality time with our families and we have time and space to do that right now. I too think good will come out of this situation in the end and lots of learning for authorities as well as us and our children #R2BC

  3. Conversations over the balcony sounds really good, it's hard ntot having that regular contact otherwise. I'm with you, I'm tempted to be envious of those who can just read and TV watch and don't have the constant Mum chorus but realistcially it is the kids keeping me sane. Stay safe. Mich x

  4. It Is such a weird situation to be in. I would never have thought we'd ever be in this type of scenario. I'm pleased you're keeping busy with the children, although mine drive me up the wall I think I would be very bored without them! R2bc
